I was on the 3 a.m. watch on my friend's Passport 40 on a leg from Charleston, SC to Oxford, Md, when I heard a mighty Whoosh, and smelled a God awful old fish smell. Off the port beam were 6 pilot whales, just lazily cruising along side me. They stayed for about 10 minutes then quietly moved away. I thanked the Universe for the gift of whales. Yes, it was magical. I wish for those moments for anyone braving the adventure of land and sea.
I can see I'll rely on you for more salty info into the future.
Love the term the 'blue desert' and yet the ocean always seems so full of life off our shores. Dolphins, seals, albatross, terns, sea eagles... but we always have to be well offshore for spotting.
I always get a few tears with the dolphins because they're so friendly, trusting, funny and those eyes!!!
And well done you for swimming on such a mizz day. I'm envious.
Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and the seals are fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) which have proliferated thanks to our dreadful farmed salmon industries inshore. The seals are protected but LOVE what they can forage from the fish farms.
The seals of course, have increased the sightings of white pointers on our coastline which is not a great feeling for we swimmers!

That’s amazing, Susan! What a perfectly magical and extraordinary marine encounter.
Full of interest. I look forward to the next story, and adventure.

Oooh what kind of dolphins and seals do you see? Any sea lions?

Interesting facts! Love seahorses too.. the men have the babies I think? Always at sunrise and hundreds of them.
